DAILY DOSE OF ART

As prescribed by Paulina Constancia

Dose # 60: PENCILS 6 – Tayou’s Giant Outdoor Pencils

Today, we’ll learn about the point artist Tayou makes with his giant sharp coloured pencils…

Dose # 55-61- PENCILS

Dose #60:
PENCILS 6-  Pascale Marthine Tayou‘s REVERSE CITY

About Reverse City: “Rows of giant pencils hanging from thick beams appear in Matsudai Joyama. On each pencil is written the name of one of the countries of the world. The giant pencils are variously colored; some are short, some are tall. This town of pencils is fixed into a stainless steel frame and hovers, detached from Nature, at a height of about two meters. Suspended upside-down, the points of this colorful city are aimed at human visitors who, looking up at it, feel both awed and threatened.” – Galleria Continua

A Little About Pascale:
“Pascale Marthine Tayou was born in 1967 in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé. Fearing becoming a link in the chain of his country’s corrupt system, he prematurely broke off his law studies and turned his hand to fine art, deciding to teach himself. Since 1994, the artist has appeared in exhibitions with his many drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations. After spending several years in Stockholm and Paris, he now lives and works mostly in Belgium. His works are an attempt to redefine postcolonial culture and see the experiences he has gathered in Europe closely entwined with themes from his home in Africa.” Read more on WKT
