HomeKRAFTed Christmas Cards 4: The Rainbow Card

Welcome to Day 4 of HomeKRAFTed Christmas Cards!

You may have tried this as a grader…coloring a whole sheet of paper with multiple rayon colours and then painting the sheet over with black paint…and when the paint dried you got to scratch the surface and the rainbow colours reveal their splendor!

Today we will use this fun material – scratch art paper. But this time we will use it to create a unique Christmas card.

Materials:

  • Kraft paper and envelope
  • scratch art paper
  • plastic stylus *comes with DAISO set (nail/toothpick will work too)
  • transparency (acetate)
  • white paper glue
  • scissors
  • metal ruler
  • exacto knife (cutter)
  • stencil/template

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cut a window on lower right frame of twice-folded A4 kraft paper, leaving at least 1/2″ all around.
Step 1
2. Cut  1/4 (of A4) transparency sheet, trim a tiny bit off all around so it fits nicely behind the window you have just made.*I thought of this step to protect the scratch art, which as you will soon find out- is very delicate.
Step 2
3.  Glue transparency on the back of window & put aside.
(See pictures below)
Step 3 – Photo 1
Step 3 – Photo 2
4. Cut  1/4 of scratch art paper to fit one frame of folded kraft paper. Do not glue yet. (See picture below)
Step 4

5. Using freehand or a stencil start scratching your art paper using a plastic stylus/nail/toothpick (as you design just be aware of how much can be seen through the window so you don’t end up with letters cut off from view) See pictures below.
Step 5 – Scratch to your heart’s desire!
*just bear in mind the limits of the window view
6. When you’re done with your scratching/drawing, glue scratch art onto the bottom right frame of the back of kraft paper.
(See pictures below)
Step 6
‘The Final Look’

“I know what I really want for Christmas.
I want my childhood back.
Nobody is going to give me that. I might give at least the memory of it to myself if I try. I know it doesn’t make sense, but since when is Christmas about sense, anyway? It is about a child, of long ago and far away, and it is about the child of now. In you and me. Waiting behind the door of our hearts for something wonderful to happen. A child who is impractical, unrealistic, simpleminded and terribly vulnerable to joy.”
