A Taste of the Sea – Wakame Salad

Wakame-Cucumber  Salad
for a serious taste of the sea
digital collage by Paulina Constancia

After this week’s ‘Somethings Fishy’ series I thought it would be nice to have a culinary treat from the sea as well. Here is a delicious salad from Japan.

It’s a sunomono (vinegared dish) made with wakame and cucumber.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup dry wakame
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/8 to  1/4 cup of sugar
2 Tablespoon sesame seeds (black and white)
1 skinny Japanese cucumber (or 1/2 fat cucumber)
sliced into thin rounds
Optional:
1/4 teaspoon soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon sesame oil

Preparation:
  1. Mix vinegar, sugar, and sesame seeds in a salad bowl and put aside.
  2. Rehydrate wakame.
  3. Slice cucumber.
  4. Put wakame and cucumber into salad bowl with the vinaigrette and mix well.
  5. Add sesame oil and soy sauce if desired.
  6. Enjoy the delicious taste of wakame, just like eating the sea with a touch of sugar.

Happy Eating or in Japan they say
 いただきます (itadakimasu)

Thanks Misa for teaching me another delicious treat from Japan!
