Helping Hands Series (5): Ananda Marga

As we all know, May 1 is International Workers’ Day (also known as May Day and Labor Day). So I thought I should dedicate this week’s posts to the countless people who have committed their labours so selflessly for change, who have extended a helping hand to this ailing world. When we watch the news, we often just see the bad that happens around the world, so I thought I’d highlight a tiny sample of the good that happens everyday in every corner of the world.
I have chosen to symbolize these efforts as a hand, a ‘helping hand’ and the design changes everyday depending on the field where help and good is being extended.
Today I salute the Ananda Marga organization for making a difference in the world by showing people the way to a balanced and fulfilling life.

Last year, I spent some time at the Ananda Marga Wellness Center. Other than the detox treatment that I received from the centre, I learned the keys to life-long health through the practice of yoga, meditation and a vegetarian diet. Indeed, Ananda Marga is helping people heal naturally and leading people to infinite peace and happiness.

Ananda means “bliss” and Marga means “path”.
So Ananda Marga means “Path of Bliss”.
Ananda Marga is a global spiritual and social service organization founded in 1955 by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti (Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar). The mission of Ananda Marga is self-realization (individual emancipation) and service to humanity (collective welfare): the fulfillment of the physical, mental and spiritual needs of all people. Through its meditation centers and service projects around the world, Ananda Marga offers instruction in meditation, yoga and other self-development practices on a non-commercial basis, and responds to social emergencies and long-term social needs.

Ananda Marga: A Journey in Joy
Humanity has come a long way, but has failed to create a society where all can live in peace and harmony. This documentary takes you on a journey through the various aspects of the Ananda Marga organization and its effort to create a better world.

Ananda Marga has a global network of centers in virtually every country of the world. Its activities encompass a wide range of projects for the welfare of humanity, animals, plants and the whole planet. These include yoga and meditation centers, schools, children’s homes, food distribution centers, disaster relief, medical centers and community development projects. Emphasis is placed on meeting the needs of the local people and assisting them in developing their personal and social resources for the prosperity of all.

The philosophy of Ananda Marga is one of universalism. It is an all-embracing outlook, recognizing God as the one limitless supreme consciousness, with all beings of the universe part of the one cosmic family.

It recognizes that a balance is needed between the spiritual and mundane aspects of existence, and that neither one should be neglected at the expense of the other. Hence the goal of Ananda Marga is “Self-realization and the welfare of the universe.”
