The dark purple berry looks like a grape or blueberry. Unlike many berries, this one is 95% seed. Only the skin around the seed is edible, and it’s used to make:
– A tasty fruit juice
– A frozen pulp that can be used in making smoothies and bowls
– A delicious sorbet, perfect for dessert or anytime
– A freeze-dried powder, especially high in antioxidants, that can be added to many foods

For hundreds of years, acai has been a traditional food of the native people of the Amazon in northern Brazil. More recently it has been eaten by people throughout Brazil, many of whom now enjoy a daily bowl of acai for breakfast. In the 1950s, doctors began to realize the health benefits of acai.

In the 1960s, the Gracie family, famous for popularizing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, recommended eating acai before and after workouts. Recently, several new medical studies in the United States and Europe have found even more exciting health benefits of acai.
